St. Martin-de-Fontenay, France
Operations Goodwood and Spring had left a very untidy line. There were places where only parts of villages were controlled. Such a place, were the twin villages, of St. Martin-de-Fontenay and St. Andre-sur-Orne. The Canadian 2nd Infantry Division controlled the entire southeast portion of St. Andre-sur-Orne and all of St. Martin-de-Fontenay except the church. It was time to change that.
Brigadier H.A. Young decided that it was time to take the church. The church had been attacked several times, by Le Regiment de Maisonneuve, but had not been taken. So Les Fusiliers Mount Royal were called upon to capture the church.
The Brigadier believed that the Germans could be driven from the area with careful planning.
The grenadiers of the 9th SS Panzer Division didn't think it would be quite that easy.
