St. Georges-d'Elle, France
To the left of the 38th Infantry Regiment was the 1st Battalion of the 23rd Infantry Regiment. They were given the assignment of moving past the east end of the hill and securing the St. Lo-Bayeux highway. Their start line was the Cloville-St-Georges-d'Elle road.
The attack would be made with A and C Companies of the battalion. Between the American positions and the German defenders was a steep sided draw. It had come to be known as Purple Heart Draw.
The elements of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Paratroop Regiment, 3rd Fallschrimjager Division were defending this area just to the south of St. Georges-d'Elle.
When the attack on Hill 192 started the attack across Purple Heart Draw started as well.
Time to see if the draw lives up to it's name.
