****
31 March, 1941
On the road near Mersa Brega, Libya
Rommel found the British positions to be weak and under manned, after sending major reinforcements to Greece, and scattering the 7th Armored Division. He watched the British feverishly trying to build up a defensive front. He couldn't understand why he should sit by and let them do this unmolested.
Rommel planned for an advance in force. That meant the 5th Light and a couple of Italian Divisions would move forward. Let the British stop his advance where they would.
The morning of 31 March Rommel gave the order to advance. The Stahnsdorf 3rd Reconnaissance Unit of the 5th Light Division began to move forward. They were met by an advance "recce" unit of the 2nd Armored Division, who had been ordered forward to see what the forward "recce" units were reporting. What's this about German tanks moving down the coast road?
Now the war was breathing again and wouldn't stop for a very long time.
