ollowing the crossing of the Rhine river in March both the US 1st and 9th armies sped rapidly eastward past scattered and demoralized resistance, and deep into Germany. On April 1st lead units of these two met at Lippstadt, enclosing the German Army Group B in a giant pocket. Inside were elements of 21 divisions, and over 400,000 German soldiers. On Hitler's orders these remnants were to defend their positions to the last man.
But not all the units received the orders...
Just south of Paderborn is the small crossroads village of Medebach. Captured by a detchament of the US 104th infantry early on, its residents hoped that the this occupation would be short-lived, and that the war would pass them by as the front line moved east. But they were wrong.
On April 1st, German units were spotted approaching the village from the northwest. These were the lead elements of Kampfgruppe Paffrath, whose soldiers did not know of Hitler's stand fast order, and were looking for a way out of the pocket.
