27 August 1944, Near Memel, East Prussia With Army Group Center destroyed, Army Group North was in a very precarious position. The entire southern flank of Army Group North was threatened. This was a situation not lost on Stavka. 2nd Baltic Front was given orders to capture the port cities of Riga, Latvia and Memel, East Prussia. This would trap even more German divisions and the war would soon be over. 5th Panzer Division had played a large part in slowing and finally stopping the Soviet attack on Army Group Center. It would once again be called upon to stop the Soviet steamroller attacks designed to destroy the German Army in the east.
