15-16 January 1945, Near the village of Borowe, Poland.
January was a busy month in 1945. Soviet attacks included offensives across the Vistula, across Poland and on to the Oder River, as well as two separate drives in Hungary to relieve Budapest.
On the morning of 15 January, elements of the 2nd Byelorussian Front opened the offensive in the area just to the north of Warsaw. This area was defended by the famous Grossdeutschland Panzer Division. The Soviet lead elements would find that taking and holding the small village of Borowe would be anything but easy.
Here the Soviets would once again see that the Germans were far from "Toothless Tigers"! There would ensue a series of attack-counterattack actions for the small village that would rival any battle in the east for intensity.
The 2nd and 3rd Fusilier Battalions of the Grossdeutschland Panzer Division would fight to both hold and reclaim the village as often as necessary. The 390th Guards Independent Heavy Artillery Regiment was just as determined to take and hold the village.
Who will own the village when you are through?
