5,500 German soldiers are surrounded in a pocket at the town of Cholm, Russia. 100 Kms northeast was another pocket of 100,000 Germans at Demyansk. Isolated for weeks and kept alive by the greatest air supply effort in history at this time. It is March 1942, the German army has begun an operation to relieve those at Cholm and simultaneously elements of the Russian 3.Strike Army is attacking on all sides of the Cholm pocket. 1,500 survivors would receive the Cholm Shield from Adolf Hitler.
