Historical scenario based on accounts in the regimental history of The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment and other source material.

The 1st Canadian Infantry Division had been on Sicily for a week and seen only halting action against the enemy. On 17 July, companies of the 'Hasty P's' had skirmished with elements of the 15th Panzergrenadier Division. The Germans began to withdraw from the town of Valguarnera while all three brigades of the Canadian division split up to go off in different directions to search the hills and once again find the enemy.

"A" Company of the Hastings made brief contact with a sister company in the hills, then lost contact again during the night. Poor communications were becoming a fact of life in the rough terrain of Sicily and battalion commanders were getting used to being out of contact with their own units. Company commanders, too, were forced to operate as independent entities for extended periods of time. "A" Company was no exception. After a long day's labours they settled in for the night to await events.

The following dawn, their sentries were astonished by the sight of six truckloads of German motorized infantry parked on the road below their bivouac. While other companies were in for another long day of hiking and groping through the hills to make contact with the enemy and their own headquarters, "A" Company had at last established the situation with some clarity...

Not sure about this scenario. The briefing does not imply that the two sides are in contact at the opening.

The Briefing for the CDN is terribly misleading. When I played, it cost me a victory. I've added below of what needs to be added for the CDN player.

You have no Victory Zone. Ignore what it was about the "crossroads to Valguarnera". I wasted the whole game fighting my way to it. What you do need to do is denied the the crossroads that your forces start in media res with. The CDN is the defender, but needs to get into position first. You only get points for kills, but denied access to the crossroads removes points from the enemy.

A very interesting map with a huge mountain along the centre. Overall, this battle seemed to lack a cohesive objective for both sides and the deployment was strange since it involved both an initial ambush and then reinforcements that arrived late and had to walk the entire length of the battlefield to get into action - by which point they were too late! As the Germans had light armour and trucks while the Canadians had none, this battle was tilted in favour of the German player.

Good infantry fight across hilly terrain with ambush and surprises. Germans have a slight edge with hmg’s and AC’s. Hard for the Canadians to match the firepower.
