"Eumenes met up with the governor of Persia, Peucetes, and his army. Eumenes also collected 3000 Hypaspists and the royal treasure from Susa. Together they moved to confront Antigonus's advancing field army. The opposing armies camped either side of the Coprates river (a tributary of the Tigris). Antigonus began crossing the Coprates using local boats sending a squadron of cavalry (400 horse-men) along with two taxies of Macedonian pikemen. These were quickly followed by a large number of light infantry, some of whom immediately began to forage in the countryside. Eumenes suddenly arrived with a flying column of 4000 hoplites and 1300 mounted troops. His horse-men fell upon the unprepared enemy infantry catching them disordered. The resulting rout left the question in the balance - who would get to the river crossing first?"
