"The Battle of Gabiene took place on a large and entirely uncultivated salt plain in the winter of 316 BC some months after Eumene's indecisive victory at Paraitakene. Antigonos placed his cavalry on the wings, the left wing under Pithon and the right under his son Demetrios and himself. He stationed the foot soldiers in the centre and extended the elephants across the whole front, supported by light troops. When Eumenes learned that Antigonos was on the right flank with his best cavalry, he drew up his army against him, stationing his best troops on the left wing. In front of the whole wing he deployed 60 elephants in a curved line supported by light troops. Then he deployed the hypaspists and Silver Shields, and then the mercenaries and phalangites, with elephants and light infantry in front. On the right wing, under Philip, he placed the weaker force of cavalry and elephants, whom he ordered to avoid battle and to observe the outcome on the other wing."
