"Encouraged by Seleukos, Ptolemy invaded Syria with an army of 18,000 infantry and 4,000 cavalry. According to Diodorus it seems that the bulk of the army was formed of native Egyptians, but there were also some Makedonians and mercenaries. To oppose this invasion force, Antigonos' young and still inexperienced son Demetrios raised a force of 12,500 foot - of which 2,000 were Makedonian phalangites and 8,000 mercenaries - and some 4,400 cavalry and 30 elephants. The two armies met at Gaza and, after an inconclusive cavalry fight, Demetrios' elephants were panicked and this had a decisive impact on the outcome."
