"After defeating Antipater near Thermopylae and besieging his remaining forces in Lamia, the Athenian-led Greek army under Antiphilos decided to raise the siege on discovering that a Makedonian relief army under Leonnatos, Satrap of Phrygia, was approaching. The two armies were approximately equal in infantry strength - some 22,000 Greeks against 20,000 Makedonians - but the Greek cavalry, including a formidable 2,000 Thessalians, outnumbered the Makedonians 3,500 to 1,500. This cavalry superiority gave the Greeks the edge in the battle, but the Makedonian foot was able to retreat onto high ground and this prevented a decisive victory."
