"The Siege of Rhodes was one of the most notable sieges of antiquity and lasted from 305 - 304 BC. Demetrios Poliorketes, son of Antigonos I, leading an army of almost 40,000 men and a navy of over 300 vessels, besieged Rhodes in an attempt to break its alliance with Ptolemaic Egypt. The Rhodians had only about 6,000 citizens and 1,000 metics to defend the city, although a few additional reinforcments sent by Ptolemy did manage to reach the city during the course of the siege. This scenario represents Demetrios' initial attempt to capture Rhodes by assaulting the city from all sides."
