The initial attacks against Darwin Hill had been beaten back with serious casualties. Lt. Colonel Jones had led a one man assault up a smaller draw to the west, which resulted in his death. But the distraction this provided allowed other British troops to advance slightly and they prepared to engage the enemy bunkers with LAW rockets.
The men of the 25th RI had resisted the initial two attacks of the paratroopers. Teniente Estevez was trying to call in artillery on the British troops hunkered down in the ravine to his front. If he could get the support he needed, he had high expectations of holding the line here and stopping the British dead in their tracks.
