Vitry-le-Francois, France, 6th September 1914: On September 5th Joffre ordered De Langle's IVe Armée to halt the retreat and stand his ground. De Langle took up positions in a arc holding a delicate center along with Foch's IXe Armée to the west. De Langle's situation was precarious since he was not in close contact with either of his neighbors. The danger had not escaped Joffre's attention and Joffre had dispatched reinforcements to De Langle's flanks in order to bolster the extended French line. By the 6th of September these reinforcements were only just beginning to arrive. It thus became a race against time as the German 4.Armee and half of the German 3.Armee crashed headlong with the intent to not lose this last opportunity to crush the French center.
