Antwerp, Belgium, 9th September 1914: In early September, the Germans launched a feinting attack on Antwerp in order to cover the withdrawal of the IX.Reservekorps and the 6.Infanterie-Division of the III.Reservekorps. These forces were to be moved to France in order to provide assistance to von Kluck and von Bülow, and would be replaced late by the 1.Marine-Division and various Landwehr brigades. The Belgians correctly assumed that this transfer of force was about to occur, and launched a second sortie out of Antwerp. Although the Belgians would be repulsed, the sortie would divert the Germans from providing much needed reinforcements to the strained forces along the Marne and Aisne.
