Along the Yser Canal, Belgium, along the English Channel, 18th October 1914: After the fall of Antwerp on October 9th, the Belgian Army refused to give up and fell back to Gent to continue the fight. On October 11th, the positions around Gent quickly became untenable as German cavalry divisions advanced on Ypres to the southwest. The Belgian Army again withdrew to the Yser Canal, 70 kilometers west of Gent and north of the BEF which was concentrating on Ypres. With their flank now secured, the Belgians were determined to establish themselves as a bulwark and hold the final remaining strip of Belgium to the last man.
