1914_1025_01s: The Salient Pushes Back - FWWC 01 France '14

Ypres, France, 25th October 1914: With the arrival of the French 9e Corps d'Armée on the 23rd and 24th of October, an optimistic Foch ordered a general offensive along the French relived sector of the line in the Ypres salient. The offensive opened on the 23rd, but it quickly came to a halt. Despite this, the offensive had positive results in the sense that it relieved the thinly stretched British line, thus allowing the 1st Division to go into reserve, and some pressure taken off the hard pressed 7th Division as the 2d Division moved over in support. On the 25th, two days into the "offensive", the reality of the situation was that although the French sector of the salient was pushing back, the British were struggling just to hold their positions against increasingly violent German assaults.
