Ypres, France, 10th November 1914: The attacks by Armeegruppe Fabeck, from October 29th to November 9th, made relatively large gains by capturing Gheluvelt, Zandvoorde, Hollebeke, Wyshaete and Messines. However, with all the success and despite coming within 6 km of Ypres, von Fabeck was incapable of destroying the Ypres salient and breaking through to the west; the timely arrival of French reinforcements allowed some respite to the battered BEF and allowed the line to hold. On November 8th, Armeegruppe Linsingen was formed and ordered to concentrate along the Menin Road, southeast of Ypres. Armeegruppe Linsingen and Armeegruppe Fabeck were both tasked with making one last push to bring glory to the Fatherland. This seemed well balanced. The French were tough and defended to the high cost of the Germans.
