Gheluvet, Belgium, 11th November 1914: Throughout the month of October, the Germans repeatedly tried to eliminate the British salient that was formed around the Belgian town of Ypres. Each German attack was beaten back with heavy loss by stiff allied resistance. The BEF's tenacious defense came at a high cost: it was being decimated and the small elite professional force was reduced to a hollow shell of its former self. With 1914 fast drawing to a close and supplies on both sides running out, the Germans sought to launch one last attempt to break through to Ypres and eliminate the salient. The remnants of the elite Prussian Gardekorps were consolidated into a single composite division and, in the spirit of Frederick the Great and the glory of St. Privat, were expected to help issue the knockout blow to the Ypres salient. This last major combat action of 1914 was destined to be the Prussian Guard's fatal grand finale.
