Poland, 23th November 1914: On the 18th, the German 9.Armee attacked east of Lodz and broke through a gap that formed between the Russian 1st and 2nd Armies. The breakthrough force swung around the east of Lodz, nearly encircling the city and completely flanking the 2nd Army. During the days that followed, Rennenkampf's 1st Army rushed to the aid of 2nd Army, and closed in behind the German breakthrough force. Von Mackensen ordered the 9.Armee to fall back, and the XX.Armeekorps pulled away to hold open a salient for the forces further south to escape to. Cut off and surrounded, the German breakthrough force turned back north, holding Russian forces off from the south while attacking through the direction whence they came days before, seeking to escape from impending disaster. I found this scenario to be a really fun mix of offence/defense/maneuver
