Macva Peninsula, Serbia, 8th September 1914:
The Austro-Hungarian 5.Armee, battered and bruised from its failed first invasion of Serbian in August, situated itself west of the lower Drina and north of the Sava, around the area known as the Macva Peninsula. This peninsula had been the location where the 2.Armee attempted to assist the doomed 5.Armee one month before.
For the second invasion of Serbia, the 5.Armee would assist the fresh 6.Armee to its south by attacking across the Drina and Sava, fixing the Serbian 2nd Army in place or, ideally, forcing it back. Potiorek instructed that 5.Armee merely had to continue forcing the Drina crossing until it succeeded.
