Macedonia, 14th October 1915:
When the Bulgarians entered the war and invaded Serbia, the Bulgarian 2nd Army had the task of conquering Macedonia, and enveloping the Serbian Army from the south, cutting off its escape route to Salonika and, ideally, the escape route into Albania. The only force standing in its way were the makeshift Serbian forces of the New Territories army, a force assigned to the newly conquered territories taken from Greece and Bulgaria at the end of the Second Balkan War in 1913.
The Bulgarian 2nd Army advanced during the Kossava storm on the 14th, making slow progress at first, but rapidly increasing as the storm subsided. The Bulgarians pushed across Macedonia, battling the Serbian delaying action, and the situation looked grim for the Serbians. Then, beginning in mid October, the Entente intervention forces finally arrived, and just in time. French forces began entering southern Macedonia, intent on linking up with the Serbian Army. As the Bulgarian 2nd Army was gradually forced to divert more strength to oppose the intervention, both the Bulgarian and French advance weakened and the French shifted to a more realistic objective: trying down as much of the Bulgarian 2nd Army as possible.
The resulting battle for Macedonia was both critical and full of tension as both sides struggled to decisively impact the colossal struggle further north.
