Late on October 25th, the first elements of the 82nd Airborne Division arrived by C-141 at Point Salines. The 2nd Battalion of the 325th Airborne Regiment replaced the Rangers on the hills to the north of the airport. Cuban and Grenadian resistance had decreased during the day, but there was still one stronghold that needed to be taken. This was the headquarters compound of the Cuban workers, nicknamed, "Little Havana."
B Company of 2/325th Airborne was assigned the mission to seize this complex and then push on to the Morne Rouge with support from A Company, dug in near Calliste. B Company's commander led a reconnaissance mission, that bumped into Cuban resistance and he was killed while one of his platoon commanders was seriously wounded. The attack was not off to a good start. Still the paratroopers would push forward at dawn.
The Cuban Commander, Teniente Coronel Tortolo, tried to rally the remainder of the Cuban workers. He was down to about a company's worth of men, but his position was untenable. The compound was surrounded by hills, either held by the Americans or that soon would be. Still, he prepared his men as best he could for the coming onslaught. He was an experienced soldier and knew the amount of firepower that the Americans could throw at his men.
