The Greek Expeditionary Force, an infantry battalion and a
Royal Hellenic Air Force flight of C-47 transports, arrived in
Korea in early Dec 1950. The Greeks were soon into the fight
At this time the PRC reaction to the UN invasion of PRK was
still pressing the UN forces back towards the pre-war border,
although the line was beginning to stabilise; and on 25 January
the UN forces had commenced a limited offensive towards the Han
River line. The "Sparta Battalion", 849 strong,, was integrated
with the US Army's famous 7th Cavalry. On the freezing night
of 29-30 January, the tough and war-hardened veterans, volunteers
all, of the "Sparta" Battalion were dug in their sector around
Hill 381,about 7km NW of Ichon. At around 0200, the 334th Regiment,
112th Division of the PLA commenced attacking the Greek positions.
