11:00 am 2 August 216 B.C. (Historical) Rome fields its largest army ever; over 80,000 men under the command of Consuls Varro and Paullus to defeat Hannibal and his 50,000 man army. Historically, the day ended with the Romans suffering the greatest defeat they would ever suffer. Losing nearly 70,000 men. Hannibal was to continue campaigning in Italy until 202 B.C. when he was recalled to Africa to face, ultimately, Scipio Africanus at Zama where he and Carrthage would face their final defeat. In the ranks of those victorious troops stood the survivors of Cannae. They had lost a great battle but lived on to win a great war.
