Spring 218 B.C. Ambush of Legio I {Historical} Emboldened by news of Hannibal's crossing of the Ebro, the Boii raised the standard of rebellion. They quickly frightened the 6,000 Roman colonists at Cremona and Placentia into fleeing to Mutina. Here they sent pleas for help to which Praetor Lucius Manlius responded by marching his army to rescue them. En route his veterans were ambushed, and had to retire to Tannetum. There he waited to be rescue. This scenario depicts the ambush Manlius led his troops into on the way to Matunia. Marching with him is Legio I and an 'Ala Sociorum' (wing of allied troops) totaling some 4,500 soldiers of 'ager Romanus' (the Roman state), and 6,000 men of the 'Socii' (allies of Rome.) Opposing him are the Gallic of the Boii and the Insurbes totaling nearly 11,000 warriors. The Gauls seek to destroy the Romans with this ambush, while the Romans seek to survive to live another day.
