The battle of the Ticinus River was Hannibal's first battle on Italian soil after entering Italy. After narrowly missing Hannibal crossing the River Rhone when his army was heading west, Publius Cornelius Scipio on hearing the news, left his army marching to Iberia he himself returning quickly to counter the threat faced by Hannibal on home soil with a smaller mobile force.
After making contact along the River Po, both sides led out strong scouting forces the next day to test the strength of their opponents. Hannibal taking command of his remaining cavalry from crossing the Alps and Scipio taking all his cavalry and some velites, though the Romans were outnumbered confidence was high.
This minor engagement between two large scouting forces is also the famous setting for the consul's rescue by his 18-year-old son, the future Scipio Africanus (if indeed this story is true).
This battle took place near the present day Ticino river, somewhere north of the Po River.
