Battle of Ilipa - News of the defeat at Metaurus had reached the ears Hasdrubal son of Gisgo, and he now realised that there was no point in delaying any longer in Iberia. With Hannibal still trapped in Italy he decided to gamble it all on one decisive battle, gathering what remained of his forces he marched North converging near the small town of Ilipa. If he won all of Iberia and Italy would fall to Carthage.
Publius Cornelius Scipio meanwhile encamped opposite his Punic enemy. Upon his arrival these two opponents spent the next few days observing and skirmishing with each other. Scipio however was studying his opponent. He lead the Carthaginians to believe that he would form his line of battle in the traditional Roman manner, this would be a very false assumption.
