This battle is based on a small cavalry action near Salaeca. Publius Cornelius Scipio wanted to cause some disruption to Hanno's (son of Hamilcar) activities in the area. Hanno had been sent by Carthage to raise new forces, and was now camped within the town of Salacea 15 miles from the Roman camp.
Scipio now asked Masinissa who had by now gone over to the Romans to lure the enemy from the town.
This Masinissa did, riding up to the town gates he managed to draw enough of the enemy cavalry from within the safety of the town walls. Masinssa then feigned a retreat with his small force, gradually luring the Carthaginians to the site of the ambush Scipio had set.
