GOLD Beach, northeast of Bayeux: Along the low-lying, sandy beaches in the center of the Allied assault, the men of the British 50th Division, XXX Corps, came ashore supported by a myriad of special assault vehicles, "Hobart's Funnies". In addition to the swimming DD tanks of the Armored Forces there were the AVRE's of the Royal Engineers Assault Regiment and the flails, track layers, and bridge tanks of the 30th Armored Brigade. As elsewhere in the British sector, the German 716th Infantry Division, including a number of Ost Battalions, did not put up much of a fight and progress inland was rapid. Nearly all the D-Day objectives were met but elsewhere, disaster was looming. At OMAHA Beach, just west of Bayeux, the Americans were hard pressed and only the quick capture of that city would relieve the pressure. For a 2 day version covering this same battle area, see #09 "Bayeux Gold"; for a 1 day scenario covering the entire British Sector, see #06 "Private Nigle". [Size: small; Length: 9 turns]
