JUNO and SWORD Beaches, north of Caen: Landing on a two Division front, the British I Corps had the objective of taking the first major goal of the Normandy Campaign, the city of Caen. The landing of the 3rd Canadian and 3rd British Infantry Divisions took place along the normally peaceful French seashore resort area against the highly strung-out German 716th Infantry Division. Elements of the 21st Panzer Division were committed early but valuable time was frittered away with indecision on where the major effort should be made, east or west of the Orne River. Each time the area of operation was changed, the armored columns had to be routed across the bridges in the congested city of Caen. In the late afternoon, however, the counterattack finally went in and actually reached the coast halfway between JUNO and SWORD. At that point, the full weight of the assault fleet intervened while the British and Canadian infantry worked at the flanks of the penetration. This 1 day scenario covers the D-Day action in the center of the British sector of the invasion area. For a 1 day scenario covering the entire British Sector, see #09 "Private Nigle".
