Headquarters, 6th Fallschirmjager Regiment, south of UTAH Beach: The Americans had selected Normandy after all. With paratroopers landing virtually everywhere within the defensive zone of the German 91st Luftlanded Division and the coastal sector, controlled by the 709th Infantry Division, known to be under attack from the sea, the situation can only be described as chaotic. Gen. Falley, 91st Division Commander, had been killed on his return trip from the map exercise at Rennes and no orders had been sent to the Fallschirmjagers stationed south of the Douve River. But not being one to sit idle, Col. von der Heydte, veteran of the drop on Crete and tough fighting in Russia and Italy, was able to secure the commitment of the Regiment directly from Korps; Orders from Gen. Marcks: "Beginning immediately, the 6th Fallschirmjager Regiment will clear the Carentan area of enemy paratroopers and attack from that area the enemy paratroopers who have landed in the region between Carentan and St. Mere-l'Eglise in the rear of the 709th Grenadier Division and destroy them". Thus the stage was set for the bitter fight for Carentan between Fallschirmjager and Paratrooper.
