On June 18th, Maj. Gen. Lawton Collins succeeded in driving his US VII Corps across the Cotentin Peninsula cutting off the German forces defending Cherbourg. On June 19th Collins began his attack to take that city, which was the largest French major port within reach of the D-Day beaches. Gen. Schlieben commanded the elements of four German divisions and support troops which made up "Fortress Cherbourg". Immediately prior to being cut off, Schlieben received a cable from Hitler stating "It is you duty to defend to the last bunker and leave to the enemy not a harbor but a field of rubble."
