I played as the Allies against an experienced opponent. I failed to conduct an effective fighting withdrawal of the frontline units, and yet the German's advanced stalled completely. It's December 20 and Piper is still stuck around Bullingen.Bastogne is a fortress by now, and no Axis unit is in sight.
Perhaps this is an accurate scenario when it comes to the OOB, but it's not good if you want a fair fight, or something that is close to the way things played out historically.

Perhaps it is preferable to play without applying some of the recommended optional rules. OoB much more detailed than the rest of the scenarios, which allows greater possibilities for maneuvering on the field. Not easy, must be played very carefully.
