Rocherath-Krinkelt, Northern Ardennes, Dec 19th, 1944: After holding up the Axis advance for several days, the situation in Rocherath-Krinkelt was now in doubt. The new drive by the SS was to be a left hook from Bullingen through Butgenbach. Here troops of the 1st Division had time to dig in, and provide top cover for their foxholes, in preparation for the inevitable assault. When the 3rd Panzergrenadies Division joined the confused battle on Dec 18th, it was quite clear that the Germans were resolved to taking Rocherath-Krinkelt once and for all, and then driving onward to Elsenborn. Good small scenario.
The German has to to encircle and surround American units to win.
A very tough scenario for the Germans. In our game, the Axis took all the objective areas, and the Allies still got a minor victory. It's hard to tell what the Germans must to to even score a draw.
I made a lot of mistakes in this game so it's hard to rate. I do think the American artillery is heavily under valued. The release of the posit fuse for use in the Bulge made the artillery even more deadly. All reports I've read indicate the artillery constantly broke up German infantry attacks by disordering the units sending them to ground.
