Mersa Matruh, June 26th 1942: Rommel was chasing the 8th Army across the desert sands he had retreated over a few months previously. Tobruk had fallen easily, after the frustration of the year before and the Allied commanders just couldn't put it all together, the chase was on. Gen. Ritchie had decided to make a stand at Mersa Matruh in order that the ground around El Alamein could be readied for defense. In reality, Rommel was almost at the end of his tether, he was using all the supplies he could capture, and his daunted Afrika Korps was getting to be quite thin on the ground. This was a desperate gamble to push the disorganized 8th Army in front of him, all the way to Alexandria, before his supplies... and men... ran out.
