It would have made sense to withdraw to Fuka to shorten the supply line, but Hitler would not let any of his commanders give up any ground for any reason. On the other hand, he had received some replacements and the two sides were at the most balanced they would ever be in the Desert War. The longer he waited, the more solid the Allies line at El Alamein became, so for Rommel the only alternative was to attack while he still had the strength left to make the attack.
