El Alamein position, August 30th 1942: Rommel was frustrated by his lack of supplies, receiving only a fifth of the requirement. It would have made sense to withdraw to Fuka to shorten the supply line, but Hitler would not let any of his commanders give up any ground for any reason. On the other hand, he had received some replacements and the two sides were at the most balanced they would ever be in the Desert War. The longer he waited, the more solid the Allies line at El Alamein became, so for Rommel the only alternative was to attack while he still had the strength left to make the attack. Montgomery had used time well to prepare his new command for defense, and this time the Allies would be waiting for the "right hook". A great combination of set-piece and wide-open-freewheeling action!
