Scenario Briefing: The collapse of the Meuse front on May 13th-15th left the French command scrambling. Having advanced deep into Belgium, the French 1st Army and the BEF were threatened with possible encirclement. Blanchard deployed the 43rd Infantry Division and various cavalry elements as a flank guard on the Sambre as the Allies backpedalled, under heavy pressure, toward the border. Meanwhile, to the south, the battered remnants of the 9th Army attempted to re-establish a defense as reinforcements were shifted south from the 7th Army. In addition to the 1st Armored, 1st North African and 9th Motorized Divisions, the 9th Army received a new commander. Despite his failure in the Netherlands, Henri Giraud was regarded as an energetic and creative leader and was tasked with restoring the 9th Army front. Arriving at Vervins on the night of May 15th, Giraud was thrust into an impossible situation. The battered infantry divisions of the 9th Army were falling back toward the border in a retreat that increasingly resembled a rout. 1st Armored Division, sent south of the Sambre on the 15th to stem the tide, was caught by the Panzers and Stukas while refueling and had been largely destroyed before it could be properly employed. After Rommel's 7th Panzer Division pierced the French border fortications at Solre-le-Chateau on the night of May 16th to 17th, the only hope for the French was to halt the panzers on the Sambre and Oise.

Recommended Rules: (Default)
Alternative Assault Resolution, Artillery Set Up, Recon Spotting, Virtual Supply Trucks, Optional Surrender, Low Visibility Air Effects, Quality Fatigue Modifier, Counterbattery Fire, Night Fatigue, Programmed Weather, Limited Air Recon.

(The Delayed Disruption Reporting rule will provide a more challenging experience for the attacking player. Playing without the Limited Air Recon rule will provide a more realistic depiction of cooperation between German aerial reconnaissance and bomber forces, but may overstate Allied capabilities.)

Additional Designer Notes:

1. Objective hexes in Belgium will gradually expire to encourage the French 1st Army to conduct a staged withdrawal toward France.

2. The German player may score points by withdrawing units from the exit hexes on the western map edge.
