The Dunkerque Pocket, 23 May 1940: By May 15th, just five days after the German invasion, it
was clear that Gamelin's Dyle Plan had failed. Though Gamelin had, prior to his dismissal, drawn
up vague orders for a counterattack to reunite the northern and southern armies, this was no more
than a pipe dream. The French armies to the south did not have sufficient forces on the Somme in
place to attack towards the north and the encircled armies were on the defensive and in no shape to
attack. By May 23rd the situation had reached its most critical point. The Panzers were speeding
northwards from Étaples, Hesdin, and Saint-Pol. An Allied garrison at Boulogne was isolated and
the lead elements of 1. Panzer-Division were approaching Calais and Gravelines. With the fighting
elements of the BEF and 1re armée stretched from Arras to Halluin, only a thin screen of defenders
on the Aa and La Bassée Canals blocked the Germans' way to critical port of Dunkerque and the
total annihilation of G.A. 1. Only a miracle could save the Allies...[Size: Large] Design Note: This
hypothetical "long version" of the scenario ends on June 4th and explores what may have happened
if the Panzers were not halted. It is intended only for human vs. human play. There are no fix times
for the Panzers. Players may choose a historic reading of the scenario by agreeing that German
motorized troops are not advanced more than 4 km beyond the Aa until May 27th. The Dunkerque
evacuations are represented by exit hexes at the port and nearby beaches. Please read attached
documentation for suggestions on "house rules" concernig the evacuations. The scenario uses
terminating objective hexes - objective hexes will disappear over time allowing the Allies to retreat
without sacrificing objective points.
