The Battle of Calais, 24 May 1940: On May 21st-23rd Brigadier Nicholson's 30th Motorized
Brigade, reinforced by the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment, arrived in France to defend Calais. Nicholson'
patrols clashed with the lead elements of the 1. Panzer-Division on May 23rd and most of the 3rd
RTR was lost. The next day Nicholson recalled all outlying British units to the city as 10. Panzer-
Division arrived. General Schaal ordered his his riflemen and tanks to attack at midday. Though
Nicholson's men could not hope to hold Calais indefenitely against an entir Panzer Division, there
could be no retreat. The evacuation of the 20th Guards Brigade from Boulogne had enraged the
French. At Calais a sacrifice was to be made for the sake of the Alliance...[Size: Small]
