440126_01: Expanding the Beachhead_Alt - PzC 13 Salerno '43

Anzio, Jan 26th 1944: After four days of 'securing' the beachhead, General Lucas, commander of the US VI Corps, agreed to a plan to expand it. The US 3rd Division was to take Cisterna with the British 1st Division taking Campoleone. This was too little, too late. Had Lucas moved on the first day, or early on the second, he may have met with success, but unfortunately, by this time, the Germans had thrown up a ring of steel around Anzio, which was getting stronger by the minute. The result was a portent of things to come, desperate fighting, in grim conditions, where neither side was willing to submit. [Size, medium]
