Stalingrad, November 19th 1942: Operation Uranus was a well conceived attack by the Russians following the all too familiar pattern of the encirclement battles of the first year of the war on the East Front. The northern prong had two operational areas, Bolshoy and Kletskaya, its goals was to cut through the weaker 3rd Rumanian Army covering the flank and drive to the Don River crossing at Kalach. The southern prong, was launched a day later from the Krasnoarmeysk area, just south of Stalingrad. In addition, there were a couple other attack concentrations further south, but again, these were planned in sectors defended by the less effective Rumanian divisions. [Size, large]

Yvan and I ended in a draw even though he had only 10 or so units on the board at the end. All my armies were still in service but depleted. I lost heavily in the first 100 turns trying to break his line. I did break through and took the city while he had shifted his men south to destroy my flank. Again I lost heavily. I destroyed his center, and eventually destroyed his left flank and then his right and got most of the rescue army but my early losses were too great a point loss to overcome even with all the objectives. Over half a million men died in our 306 turn battle, about 55% German and the rest Russian. Once I broke through the line, I adopted Sherman's flanking tactics to overwhelm any defensive line. I just had too many units for him to stop.
