Budapest, Hungary, December 31st 1944: The Hungarian capital city was encircled on 26 Dec 1944. Hitler order 4.SS.Pz.K to relocate from Poland to Hungary. By the evening of 31 Dec 44, the leading elements had detrained and a decision was made to launch an immediate attack. The goal of the SS troopers was to rescue their besieged SS brethren in Budapest. Hitler's goal on the other hand, was to re-establish the status-quo. Shades of Stalingrad all over again! We called it a day on Turn 87 of this one. At that point it was a draw, albeit very close to an Axis marginal defeat. The Russians had stopped the rescue effort cold, but could make no headway in taking Budapest. The problem is that the VP hexes (apart from a few in Budapest) are too low to encourage either to make any further moves. It was going to cost the Russians too many casualties to bother pushing west, while the German rescue forces were not going to capture any worthwhile VP hexes by pushing east, once it was clear they wouldn't get to Budapest. So the game became a bit of a stalemate and we decided to end it. It was fun earlier however from a Russian player perspective, as it seemed the German rescuers were very very close to breaking through to Budapest. Only by ignoring Budapest was I really able to stop the Germans cavalry from coming to the rescue. One issue was that the Russian infantry have no hard attack capacity, which seemed surprising in early 1945.
The Soviets could stop the Axis advance quite easily. The attacker didn´t have enough troops to achieve a breakthrough so my opponent decided to concede.
