El Guettar, 20Km SE of Gafsa, Mar 20th 1943: There was little confidence in the fighting ability of US II Corps in mid March. As a result, it was assigned to be a sideshow for the 8th Army, it was to conduct a flank battle to assist the main attack up the coast. The limitations on Patton were to seize the town of Gafsa, and take the key passes throught the Eastern Dorsal. However, he was to merely threaten the Axis flank, not to proceed through the Dorsal onto the Gabes plain. Thus, Patton was kept on a very short rein. He instructed his staff to plan Operation Wop, to attack the Italians and "give them some steel!" The Axis forces had pulled back to a defensive position overloooking the small date palm oasis village of El Guettar. The attack began on the night of Mar 20th.
