Operation Mallard, 14 November 1944: To avoid the high casualties and frustration which
characterized the first battles in the Maas Salient, Operation Mallard would employ overwhelming
resources. Eight infantry battalions from the 51st (Highland), 53rd (Welsh), and 7th Armoured
Divisions, backed up by two armoured brigades, specialized vehicles from 79th Armoured, and
more than three hundred artillery pieces, would participate in the initial assault. Opposing XII Corps
was Kampfgruppe Hermann, composed of just three understrength battalions. Hermann's men, who
had fought with distinction at Nijmegen and Overloon, would soon be overwhelmed by an
irresistable force...
[Size: Small]
Design Note: This "Getting Started" scenario is intended to acquaint new players with the
mechanics of crossing rivers and canals, including the use of assault boats and amphibious vehicles.
Only the first hours of Operation Mallard are represented and certain units that did not historically
participate in the initial Allied assault will not be released.
