The Right Flank, 30 September 1944: While the Allies planned their offensive against the Maas
Salient, the Germans planned a counterattack of their own. Generalfeldmarschall Walter Model of
Heeresguppe B ordered Bittrich's II. SS-Panzerkorps to eliminate the Allied bridgehead north of the
Waal. Model envisioned a coordinated attack to be conducted by two Wehrmacht and one SS Panzer
division and the newly formed 363. Volksgrenadier-Division, but due to a lack of transport these
troops could not be concentrated in the area quickly. Impatient, Model ordered the attack to go
forward on October 1st with whatever forces were available. Though Market Garden had failed, the
fighting in Holland was far from over...
[Size: Large]
Design Note: This scenario starts as a draw. The Allied player can win by successfully defending
the Waal bridgehead (the "Island") and eliminating the Maas Salient. The German player wins by
defending the Maas Salient and eliminating the Allied bridgehead north of the Waal.
Though the 7th Armored Division was located in in the British VIII Corps zone, it remained under
the command of the US XIX Corps for the duration of the battle. Though it would make sense for
the Allied player to attach the 7th Armored to VIII Corps at the earliest opportunity to place the
division "in command," it is suggested that he refrain from using corps attachments.
This scenario should be played with the "Indirect Fire and Airstrikes by the Map" optional rules to
enable certain British artillery units to provide fire support for the Americans.
