Scenario Briefing: While fighting in the area of Tomarovka-Borisovka and Belgorod continued, the commander of the Voronezh Front, Vatutin, ordered the armored units to advance south, leaving the infantry divisions behind to reduce of pockets of resistance. On the German side, command had decided to move the III.PzK from the Mius area after realizing the seriousness of the Soviet offensive. One of the first units to arrive was the 3rd Panzer Division, which without any rest was ordered to head north from Kharkov to halt the Soviet attack and allow an orderly withdrawal of the remains of Armee-Abteilug Kempf from their positions at Borisovka, Tomarovka and Belgorod. The area chosen to mount the defensive line by the 3rd Panzer Division was around Zolochev. The resistance offered by this unit allowed time for the arrival of SS Divisions from the Mius and the withdrawal of Armee-Abteilug Kempf towards the Kharkov area.
