Scenario Briefing: After the breakdown of the German front, the armored units of the Voronezh Front launched in pursuit of the retreating German units heading south. Vatutin ordered the 5th Guards Tank Army to head towards the Zolochev area and the 1st Tank Army to head to Bogodukhov while his infantry units, the 53rd Army, 5th Guards Army and 6th Guards Army, eliminated the pockets of German resistance in the Tomarovka-Borosovka, Graivoron and Belgorod pockets. Von Manstein, seeing that the entire line was reeling, began to draw reinforcements from other areas of the Ostfront, bringing the Grossdeutschland division back from the Orel area and the 3rd Panzer Division, Das Reich and Totenkopf SS Divisions from the Mius area. The Wiking SS Division would be the last to arrive. The 3rd Panzer Division was dispatched to Zolochev to face the 5th Guards Tank Army and the Das Reich to the area southwest of Bogodukhov to face the 1st Tank Army. The confrontation between these units, which had already locked horns with each other during Operation Zitadelle, resulted in an attempt to envelop the positions of the 3rd Panzer Division in the Zolochev area. The 3rd Mechanized Corps launched an attack towards Ol'Shan which was defended by the first Das Reich units that arrived in the area and which protected the left flank of the 3rd Panzer Division.
